Recently, however, these construction materials have been increasingly discussed due to their impact on emissions, waste production and the climate crisis. In response to this, designers, architects and other scholars investigate novel approaches to biomaterials, recycling options, and circular models of fabrication and construction. The aim is to form symbiotic alliances with fungi, beetle-infested trees, bacteria or residual materials and acknowledge the surprising potentials of these unconventional collaborators.
The exhibition “Closer to Nature. Building with Fungi, Trees, Mud” at Berlinische Galerie presents three examples of how elements of nature can be understood as equal partners in architecture. Connected with a tour of the exhibition, we invite you to discuss symbiotic practices such as these - in construction, architecture and the design of daily objects. Researchers, designers and architects present core ideas of their projects, bring prototypes and photographic material to jointly discuss symbiotic futures with the participants.
The tour will be in German, the subsequent keynote speeches and discussions in English.
