The prize is a new concept of "Vattenfall Art Prize Energy", awarded annually since 1992. In 2009 Vattenfall realigned the Art Award together with the Berlinische Gallery and brought him to Berlin, the art capital of Germany. In addition to painting and drawing he will awarded also for media art, performance and sculpture by internationally renowned artists who live and work in Berlin. The prize includes an exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie, the production of a catalogue and a purchase for the collection Vattenfall.
Until 2008 the prize was aimed by Vattenfall Europe Mining & Generation in Cottbus and was awarded to artists with the center of life in the new federal states including Berlin.
