KÜHN MALVEZZI, THE GLASS WAREHOUSE MARKER, 2003/2004
Field of letters and design of the museum’s forecourt
Berlinische Galerie, Landesmuseum für Moderne Kunst, Fotografie und Architektur
Art award for the design of the outside area of the Berlinische Galerie in conjunction with the Office for Art in Public Spaces of the Senate Department for Science, Research, and Culture, 2003
The black and yellow field of letters accentuates the length of the museum’s forecourt. It consists of the names of 160 exemplary artists who are represented at the Berlinische Galerie; these names are strung together in continuous rows. For a visitor standing in the middle of the field, it is difficult to separate familiar names from unfamiliar ones. Malapropisms and funny misinterpretations often are the result. Read vertically or diagonally, nonsensical poems emerge - a reference to Berlin Dada, an important part of the Berlinische Galerie’s collection. Children enjoy spelling their names by jumping from letter to letter.
