New music, new concerts

Novembergruppe Evenings

It is a handsome record: in just under 15 years the Novembergruppe organised not only some 40 exhibitions at home and abroad, but also 21 musical soirées. Among the composers who joined the association of artists from 1922 onwards were well-known names such as Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler, but also experimental creatives like Stefan Wolpe and Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt, now familiar only to experts.

These concerts made the Novembergruppe an important forum for Neue Musik. The formats designed to win over an audience for avant-garde compositions were innovative in themselves. At a Novembergruppe Evening, it was common for a piece to be played more than once or to be interrupted for a discussion with the musicians. There were also demonstrations of modern instruments such as the player piano or pianola, played not by human hand but by an automated mechanism. The music was “pre-programmed” on rolls of perforated paper.
