In cooperation with Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung, Berlinische Galerie awards the Eberhard Roters Grant for Young Art to Berlin-based photographer Paul Hutchinson. On behalf of this occasion Berlinische Galerie will showcase a small work presentation between 14-20 October in its auditorium.
German-Irish Paul Hutchinson was born in Berlin in 1987 and grew up during the city´s post-reunification period. He studied at Berlin University of the Arts and Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, London. The young photographer has thus far worked in New York, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro and most recently Bangalore.
As a teenager Paul Hutchinson has been of Berlin’s Hip Hop scene of the 1990’s. This urban youth culture he now approaches as an attentive observer: On behalf of an invitation by the Goethe Institute, for his first monograph “B-Boys, Fly Girls & Horticulture“ Hutchinson worked with the local Hip Hop scene in Bangalore, India. The resulting artist book, its concept and design, as much as the self-conscious work methods of the young artist, strongly convinced the jury.
Hutchinson’s photographs oscillate between documentary and poetics. What might at first sight seem like a spontaneous snapshot, is a carefully composed photographic expression, an aesthetic that speaks of inner motion through color and form. Often Hutchinson works specifically with the denial of individualizing information: The subjects turn away, their faces are covered or cut off, in group pictures juveniles merge to singular, intertwining shapes. Especially through details - the seemingly banal or very personal associations - Hutchinson achieves to convey a vivid and over-individualized characterization of a subculture. The artist pushes the boundaries of the medium so far that his images develop a painterly substance.
