Architecture of Collage

International Symposium

In recent years, the rapid uptake of digital media in all fields of cultural production has created an exponential growth of images, sounds and objects, and a fundamental shift in modes of production. The emergence of these new technologies contributed to the evolution of new forms of creativity. Thereby collage – understood in its widest sense as the artistic fusion or carefully crafted juxtaposition of disparate elements – has made a comeback as one of the dominant models of cultural production in the twenty-first century.

Against this backdrop, the international symposium Architecture of Collage, conceived and moderated by Berlin-based curator Lukas Feireiss, investigates the idea of collage as an artistic strategy and an inspiration for architectural exploration. With this in mind, the symposium re-evaluates spatial production modes beyond disciplinary boundaries and protocol, together with prolific international architects, researchers, urbanists and editors, such as Gian Piero Frassinelli, founder of Superstudio, the artist and co-founder of the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) Madelon Vriesendorp or architect and urbanist Winy Maas of MVRDV. The symposium Architecture of Collage thereby aims to further investigate the epistemological surplus of the collage in architecture as a cultural narrative that extends and reinterprets preceding narratives.
